Intro: Buenavista, hidden away in the misty mountains of Manizales isn´t your regular hostel. Home to best friends Mao and Andres, the Manizales-born pair began opening their spare rooms to travellers just last year. With dense forests on their doorstep and panoramic mountain views, their finca-style home is a relaxing retreat from the city. Located in Vereda, a tiny neighbourhood of less than 20 houses, the hostel is a social hub for the friendly, artisan bunch of Colombian musicians, writers and jewellery makers and one of the biggest draws of staying here is meeting the pair´s fun group of friends. Enjoy forest walks, bike rides and natural hot springs by day and then relax back at the house come evening when friends will pop round for a few beers, good food, a bit of drumming and a dance. Cook up some home-made pizzas in hostel´s brick wood-fired oven, practice your Spanish with the neighbours or simply laze in the garden and enjoy the sunsets.

Facilities: There are two 4-bed dorm rooms plus a single room (good for longer-term stays). Mao can also fit in two more people in the room attached to his. There are two bathrooms with hot showers, a communal kitchen, living room and a spacious front porch with seating and good views. There´s a well-tended garden that attracts lots of humming birds, a good vegetable patch and plenty of flowers. A barbecue and brick, wood-fired oven are in the garden where Mao and Andres bake bread and pizzas. Mao can organise any number of day trips, from horse riding to visiting rivers, coffee farms and hot springs and the pair have good guide contacts for camping or day trips to Los Nevados. If you like cycling, don´t miss their epic day-long ride downhill. You´ll drop more than 1,300m from the mountains of Manizales at 2,400m to the town of Arauca at just 1,000m. Feel the temperature rise and enjoy the stunning scenery. Beds are $20,000 a night which includes lots of extras, such as car trips into town, lots of coffee and home-cooking. Cooking is generally communal so be sure to chip in your fair share when Mao and Andres head to the market to stock up. Better still, go with them and see the bustling mercado for yourself. WiFi is available.
